What is Digital Marketing?

Digital marketing is the umbrella term for all online activities that are designed to either generate leads or create opportunities for sale. This includes things like: paid social media ads, Google ads and SEO, YouTube ads and organic social media activity.

Digital marketing is distinct from sales, although they are inextricably linked. Marketing brings in people who are aware and are in need of your products and services (qualified leads), and sales picks up those leads and converts them into paying customers or clients.

Digital marketing is also distinct from other forms of advertising: influencer advertising, podcast and radio, TV commercials, product placement and associate marketing.

How will my business benefit from Digital Marketing?

The kind of digital marketing that you engage in will largely depend on your business and sales model. If you are selling individual products or subscriptions directly to consumers, you could get a lot of traction on paid social media advertising on platforms like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.

If you’re offering products or services that target professionals or other businesses, you may want to invest a some of your marketing budget on LinkedIn Ads whilst also focusing on ‘offline’ marketing via peer-to-peer networking. No matter that unique nuances of your business, engaging in some kind of digital marketing has great benefits for a lot of businesses.

Be visible where your customers are searching for you.

Increase client base and quality leads that convert to sales.

Gather high volume, high quality data to test your product against the market.

I've use social media ads before but it just didn't convert into sales...

There are a lot of factors that could have contributed to this outcome. The first thing that you need to have is a clear marketing strategy that outlines exactly what return you want to see on your investment, how you will measure that return and what activity will lead to that.

The second ‘stage’ of a lot of marketing activity is sales. You may find that you actually generated a lot of leads through your ads, but they weren’t converting because there isn’t a sales process that follows up on those leads. Such a process could be picking up the phone and booking a product demo with the prospective client, or simply having a really good landing page that will convert into online purchases.
